After finishing his schooling in Bombay, he studied at the Fergusson College in Pune and thereafter at the Government Law College, Bombay. He graduated with a law degree in 1952. Later, he enrolled at the London School of Economics (LSE) to pursue Economics, and during the summer of 1955, he was one of the first students from Great Britain to be invited on a study visit to China. After graduating with a BSc from LSE in 1956, the same year he was called to the Bar from Lincoln's Inn, London. In 1967, he was invited by Henry Kissinger to attend Harvard’s Summer International Seminar - a program that brought to Harvard rising stars in foreign policy and political, cultural and literary life from Europe and Asia.
